John Riddell: Democracy in Lenin's Comintern

How did Communist parties handle issues of internal discipline and democracy in Lenin’s time? The recent intense discussion within the British Socialist Workers’ Party (SWP) and beyond has heard claims that the SWP rests on the traditions of democratic centralism inherited from the Bolsheviks.

Financial Appeal

We're up and running! An appeal for funds to kickstart the IS Network

Financial Appeal

RevSocs - accommodation appeal

Dear Comrades,

The Revolutionary Socialists are holding our first National Meeting in London on 8 September. We have invited organisations and individuals from across the country, and are hoping for a good turnout.

In order to help us get people from outside London we are making an appeal for accommodation from comrades and sympathisers. If you could publicise this appeal amongst your members, we would be very grateful.

The details would be accommodation for either Friday and Saturday night, or both. If people can offer any kind of other assistance, this would also be welcome.

Fraternally,

KD Tait (for) Revolutionary Socialists – Britain

The Exchange - magazine for Tory party demo

One of the biggest changes since the inception of the IS Network is comrades' willingness to work with other organisations. We have seen this through joint meetings with the IWW in Sheffield and our discussions with Anti-Capitalist Initiative and Socialist Resistance. The latest development of our relationship with the latter two organisations has been coming together to produce a magazine publication 'The Exchange'.

Conference Arrangements Committee

The International Socialist Network will hold its Policy and Politics Conference in London over the weekend of 12 and 13 October – venue TBC.

In order for the conference to be as representative and inclusive as possible, the Steering Committee proposes that a Conference Arrangements Committee is established. The purpose of this committee is to ensure the conference runs smoothly and is both politically and practically accessible to all who may want to attend.

Organising a conference of this potential size and political importance cannot be left to the Steering Committee alone, and as such we are calling on comrades to get involved with a CAC working group. If you are interested in being involved in this group, then please email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Call for submissions for October policy conference

The International Socialist Network has been in existence for nearly six months. Necessarily much of our initial period has been spent establishing working structures, and working through the consequences – theoretical, political and personal – of our departure from the SWP. The circumstances of that departure were not chosen by us, and the nature of the crisis that precipitated it meant that we were united on at least two crucial principles (the centrality of feminism and of internal democracy to socialist organisation) but differed on questions of the current political landscape and the place and priorities of the IS Network within it.
